- Influenza Preventative Measures
The following are preventive measures to guard against potential infection with any influenza virus or other contagious, febrile respiratory illness:
- Get your flu shot ASAP.
- Stay at home if you are sick (this must be emphasized to our active duty personnel...carrying your illness into work and exposing your shipmates is not in the best interests of the Coast Guard nor the Nation).
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Clean your hands often with soap and warm water or alcohol-based gels to protect yourself from germs.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs are often spread when you touch something that is contaminated and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Contact a health care provider if you had a flu shot and you develop flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches). Before visiting a health-care setting, inform the health care provider about symptoms and recent possible exposures. (This will allow the clinic, medical office, or sick bay to provide an alternate setting for the ill person to wait rather than expose others in the clinic to a contagious illness).

- RBS Device Approval & Award Criteria
The NEXCOM has approved the criterion, recently developed by an RBS Directorate committee, for members to earn a new device. Called the Recreational Boating Safety (RBS) Device, it is intended to recognize members who extraordinarily support the Auxiliary's programs and activities within, or related to, the traditional RBS missions and programs. The Department of Boating's website has posted the requirements for award of this device (PDF:16 KB / 1 page). It is hoped that the earning of this new device will be a source of pride to our members who choose to devote their resources and efforts toward recreational boating safety.

- They Saved The Day
While this Auxiliarist was backing his trailer to the ramp, he noticed someone in his boat. At first he thought it was the Dockmaster giving him a hand. As he jumped from his car it was obvious that someone was stealing his boat and driving it away from the dock area. He started yelling "Someone is stealing my boat!" He then called the Coast Guard and the rest, as they say, is history. Read this first-hand story of how the Coast Guard saved the day, now on SITREP, the Auxiliary's National e-magazine.

- AFRAS Gold and Silver Awards
AFRAS (Association for Rescue at Sea) annually presents awards to individuals who had a significant role in a life saving event at sea. The gold award is presented to enlisted members of the Coast Guard and the silver award is presented to members of the Auxiliary. Note that the gold/silver does not represent a level of the award, it merely represents the service branch of the recipient. This year one gold and three silver awards were presented in Washington, D.C. Read the exploits of the individuals who earned the recognition and witness the actual ceremony on SITREP, the Auxiliary's National e-magazine.

- AUXPLUS-PE Test Begins
Over the past 15 months, the I and E Departments have been working together to deliver to every Flotilla an easy-to-use database tool for the permanent tracking of all Auxiliary public education students. Known as AUXPLUS-PE, the software is now in the testing stage. We have asked all DSO-PE to identify 2 Flotillas in each District who will give this program a field evaluation between now and the end of December. Based on their feedback, we will make any necessary "tweaks" and will be releasing it to the entire Auxiliary at N-Train 2006. Our primary objective has been to keep it as simple as possible and yet enable the central storage of all national PE records. So, in the future, when someone calls any of us for a lost card or certificate, we'll be able to instantly find them and provide even better service. In addition, AUXPLUS-PE includes added features to enable you to print out student rosters, completion letters, completion certificates, and course completion cards.
