- Hurricane Katrina Update for DFAS and payday
Due to Hurricane Katrina, the banks and credit unions in LA, AL, and MS have implemented contingency procedures.
For those members, employees, and retirees impacted by Hurricane Katrina either due to living in the vicinity of the disaster areas or maintaining accounts in the area, the Federal Reserve Bank, the FDIC, and the Banking and Credit Union Associations have implemented procedures to pull electronic funds transfers (EFT) files into their alternate banking and credit union sites where possible.
The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) is closely monitoring the financial institutions as each progress through their contingency procedures to assure funds are available to account holders. Most banks and credit unions should have the EFT funds deposited into account holders accounts within the next 24 to 48 hours.
For those expecting delivery of checks by mail in the declared disaster areas, local information is the best source for determining when mail delivery will be resumed in your area. Central pick up locations are being planned now by the U.S. Postal Service and will be announced.
If a military member or civilian employee cannot access an account in the Hurricane Katrina disaster area, we recommend contacting the home office of your financial institution and then contacting your local finance office if funds are required immediately. The finance office can provide for a partial or casual payment, in cash. Any payments received in cash will be deducted from future pay.
For more information visit the DFAS website.

Coast Guard Headquarters is requesting urgent technical support for hurricane relief efforts. FEMA is looking for people with the ability to keep a communications suite up and operational. This includes computers, a satellite link, and radios. Training will be provided so specific knowledge is not required. This is categorizing the need as someone with an technical background that is easily trainable and can follow directions over the phone to troubleshoot computer, LAN and radio equipment.
If you meet the basic technical criteria, please complete an application. We will get back to you with more details, if you are called upon. Thank you for your offers of support at this time of critical need.
